Hi gang,

I meant to ask this earlier, and this mess with copyright infringement reminded me again, how long do you usually keep your posted images linked/active before you take them down again? And just as importantly, what about reposts? In the Avian Gallery, once an image is past page 2 or older is there any sense in keeping it linked?

cheers, Oliver

Forever. I think it's nice that if you run a search for a subject or for someones work to find older material available.

We purge the images that have been uploaded to the NatureScapes.Net server by members periodically, and that is one of the reasons. For image critique purposes, most of which happens within the first few days of posting, certainly the first week, there doesn't seem much sense in keeping images around indefinitely. I think people should plan to have their images up for at least 30-45 days, though. Removing the link after only a week seems a bit too quick, a lot of people go on trips and like to catch up when they get back.

For my own website, I had the images up for about six months and took down the entire site for a base level redesign. Graphically it looks the same, but I changed the way the tables worked for my own sake. The images changed then. I check the logs frequently and if someone was "hotlinking" I would see it - I check out almost every new referrer. But I guess it's not a bad idea to change the names every so often, although it would take a lot of time as the galleries grow.

I'm curious what other people do.

Note that on my personal website the images are on HTML pages. Those pages would not change (so would still be searchable), just the name/location of the image.

I keep 'em around for a month or so. My images are on my site, and I have limited space which has to be used for my website as well as critique images (though I do plan on buying a membership at some point, so Greg can host for me...)

Are the threads in the critique forums kept around forever? I don't recall seeing the NSN policy on that. I recall back at NPN, image forum threads with no activity were deleted after a month, while discussion forum threads were kept forever.

How do you do that? Is it specific to your ISP, or is there some generic way of doing this?

If I see a number of referrals from a particular site that are out of the ordinary, I usually investigate. If I find the link, that's okay. If an image is hotlinked, there is supposed to be a way to tell from the logs but I sure don't know what it is...I just call tech support at the ISP and they figure it out for me.

There are lots of web savvy people at NSN, hopefully someone can explain how to read the logs.

5 to 7 days mark ... I don´t see any point in having ´em up longer going by the number of views - usually the # of views remains static after around 5-6 days ( at least on my posts  )

Heather,

there is a way of preventing hotlinking on a sitewide basis - I´ll PM you the link on how to later today ( although I am not sure how it will effect peeps who post images " hotlinked " from their own sites ...

It makes sense, but if so IMHO it would be more appropriate to delete the whole thread.
I went checking the older posts on the Birds gallery and most of them don't have the image available anymore so I don't see whats the point.
