As of just now I'm still able to access the site, including Greg's image above Birds, as well as the 3 links to Bill Lockhart, Shoot the Light, and Greg's website. Only on Chas's site do I get Link Not Found.

I reach the site by Greg's first reference (and not Heather's later, which does have all red x's in lieu of photos). Will check this again shortly...

I looked there and was told I was not authorized on that site. Perhaps he has closed it. It looks as if he was trying to use others photos to boost his reputation. One thing he did is chose good photographers to steal from.
Glad you found him.

Yep, since I informed the ISP of the copyright violation(s) they were obligated by law to take the site down. See Heather's post a ways back:

"Notice and take down." If the provider is made aware of the infringement, the provider must remove the copyrighted material or disallow public access to the site.
Congrats on the removal of the site ... good to know the ISP was quickly responsive to your email.

I have, once again, been able to access the website readily at
http://www.avianphotography.net/Gallery.html
and see Greg's Great Egret above the word Birds.

Jill, when you get to the page hit the refresh button in your browser. I'm wondering if the page is in your cache on your local machine.

FWIW, I haven't been able to access any of the site since late last night.

I cannot access the site or any of the various pages that I visited yesterday. IE can't find it or says that access is forbidden.

An attempt to access the main page says "forbidden", and an attempt to access the gallery page says "page not found". Fast work on the part of the ISP or photographer, whoever responded.

I'm still able to get there, Greg, and hitting Reload returns to the same page with your image. Since I did put the site in Favorites for this purpose only, I'll delete it from there ... and see if I continue to reach it from your initial reference. Back shortly ...

Now deleted from Favorites, but can still access the website, including when hitting Reload. Know nothing of 'cache' but have heard the word!

Jill must have the site loaded in her cache, refresh will just reload it from cache if her browser is set to do that. If she clears the cache and then tries to access the site it will not work. Its definitely offline.

Looks like for $199 you can Digimarc your images and have their web crawler hunt them down.

It sucks that the honest person has to spend money to track the criminal. Were I earning a living doing this, I think I would absolutely use this service.

Thanks, E.J. I'll tell my hubby to do just that ... and report later. Jill

Click on this:
http://www.metaeureka.com/cgi-bin/odp2. ... otography/

Then go down to "Avian Photography".
Then click on the 4th little icon
Then move over to the 4 dates and click

You should see the page with all images removed, and the red x's showing only.

It seems to me that this is a recurring problem from time to time. I do not know much about website designs--but what would happen if you removed an image from your website--As an example egret.jpg and replaced it with another image name egret.jpg containing not a bird but an image of your choice.

My choice would be a picture of a jail or jail bars--with text "Image theft is a crime"--Of course if I was in a more twisted/obnoxious mood I would look for some image in the public domain involving a nude male--Something resembling the work of Robert Mapplethorpe or even an image of Michaelangelo's David.

Rocky,

If you are referring to "hotlinking", where someone has your image hosted on your website showing up on theirs, plenty of people have found creative things to do with that. By replacing the image with a file of the exact same name, and uploaded to the exact same location, they put in text such as "Stolen image from http://www.mysite.com", etc.

The problem here is that the person actually saved the image from somewhere and uploaded it to his own site. Before the website was taken off line you can see that the image referral was to his own site. There had to be a "right click of the mouse" (or equivalent) somewhere in the process.

Speaking of right-clicks, I notice a lot of people, inlcuding you and Greg, have scripts blocking the right-click functionality. Do people find these work?

I've never seen one of these scripts that I couldn't get around in about 10 seconds, so they really won't prevent anyone from actually copying your material. I guess they do tell the person doing the copying that it is illegal, so it might "educate" some ignorant people.

Are right-click scripts really worthwhile?

(Oh, and Greg/Heather--I see your script checks for IExplorer or Netscape--what will it do for other browsers?)
