The shot of a Rufous-backed Shrike, Lanius schach, was captured today at a nature reserve here in Hong Kong. The BG was the water surface of a distant pond hence rather grey. How I wished for natural perch instead ...

This is great KK. Love the pose and the bug. Shrikes will tend to use the same perch when they hunt, you might consider attaching a perch to this post.

Not too fond of the perch but the bird is great! Mr. Murphy's suggestion to add a perch to the sign is a good one. He may even offer you a good deal on a used perch.

What a lovely shrike. Most of the best shrike images that I've seen have been on barbed wire or man made perches. Therefore, I feel he's right at home. Of course an "Alan original" just above that perch would be a bonus. Great catch.....for the shrike and you.

Do you work near the Nature Reserve as I notice you shoot there many mornings?

Great shot! Love the bug and the bird! I think in this case the grey BG is a bonus as it really helps the bird stand out. Also, I would try Alan's suggestion of adding a perch to the sign for sure, but this is excellent already.

cheers, Oliver

Thank you all for the positive comments!

Great suggestion Alan! May just do that next time ...

Lana,

It takes me forty minutes to drive to the reserve from home. Not bad by your N America standard I suppose. Time spent on bird search is much longer of course. With experience you know where to look for them but then again there is no sure win! Luck plays a large part ...

I agree with Mark about that grey BG. Exposure well handled. Nice details.
