Common Merganser

EOS300D, Sigma 100-300 F4,
ISO 400, 1/250 @ F8. Flash -1

This was another shot from our weekend trip to a marvelous wildfowl and wetlands reserve in the West of England. The variety of residents and over-wintering birds was just incredible and we could happily have stayed there for days!

Please correct me if I'm wrong on the ID but hope you like him.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

As your others, this one is nice. A wonderful pose and nice detail. It looks the 300D handles the ISO 400 well. This looks like a merganser but not the ones that I have seen over here. Nice shot!!

Nice shot and love the pose, Carol!
You had done well with the exposure for this difficult contrasting subject too ...

A very nice shot of what is most likely a Common Merganser. The bill definitely defines it as a Merganser but there are many types around the world and I don't currently have access to all of them. If this were taken in North America there would be no doubt but since its taken in Europe, I'm only 95% sure.

Gorgeous shot, Carol, with excellent preening action. Sharp as a tack and exposed beautifully. Because the reflection adds little to the image, I couls easily see the bird lower in the frame.

Carol,

Excellent shot. I like the preening pose. You did well with the exposure of the white feathers and capturing the green in the head.

This is sweet -- the preening activity really adds a different look with the resulting curves.

Carol,

A lovely photo and yes, your bird is a Common Merganser................there is no other species in the world that looks like your bird.

Very nice! My only suggestion would be to have more space on the left of the bird than the right. Thanks for sharing.

Another really great shot.! :) While I would like a lower shooting angle, I still think this is excellent. I really love the textured head feathers.
