Northern Cardinal - Roma, Texas, USA
EOS 10D, 500mm, 1.4x, 1/125, f/8, Flash @ -2/3, ISO 400

As promised a few weeks ago, I have tons of Cardinal images that I am going to sprinkle in over the next few months. Here is another from Roma, Texas. In many ways I find the female Cardinal an even more interesting bird to photograph than the male.

While the female doesn't have the bright punchy color of the male she has more variety of shades and hues. This is an incredibly beautiful image.

Great looking female Cardinal.

The variety of colors make these very interesting.

I spotted a new male in the yard over the weekend and need to see if I can do something with him and find the female.

My nemesis -- the single backyard flavor that has been most evasive.
Very nice E.J. what variety is this? I am not familiar with the red about the tail and crest.

This would be the South Texas type which I find to be the most colorful.

Beautiful bird and perch. Has a bit more of a flashed look than I like but a very nice shot.

This one is very nice with a wonderful BG and perch. I have them in my backyard but never seem to get them when the conditions are right.

I don't think it is over flashed, just that the B/G is a little dark in relation to the bird. That could be easily fixed in Photoshop CS. Great shot, pose and perch.

Georgeous image! Wonderful perch and background. Our female cardinals here in Maryland don't have the bright reds that yours has. I do agree with the comment that the females are more interesting than the males. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have no idea how in the world you are able to consistently produce such amazing quality. I like the strong diagonal here, it just makes the whole composition work perfectly. The colors are wonderful. It is a tad soft though, just a little. Bill
