Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)
Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, FL, on 8 Dec 2003

Here’s another image of my friend. His ring glows in this view.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been playing around with noise reduction in high ISO shots. At ISO 1600, this was my noisiest image. No noise reduction was used in BreezeBrowser’s RAW conversion process. I believe that Noise Ninja performed wonderfully on this image. What do you think?

I certainly do not advocate shooting at high ISO (800 or above on the 1D) unless it is mandatory. Often flash by itself can prevent you from taking this radical approach, especially when the bird is relatively close. There are times, however, when push comes to shove and ISO must be increased to achieve your goals. My trials and tribulations at ISO 800-1600 have given me empirical evidence that very nice images can be produced with good noise reduction techniques.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

I use Neat Image and also get very satisfactory results at high ISO but now Nose Ninja has piqued my interest. I'm going to try it out to see what it's about :)

WOW!! I may not shoot much at ISO 1600, but it looks like Noise Ninja is worth having, beautiful image, expecially the bg.

This is an excellent portrait...showing wonderful detail and color. An amazing job shooting at ISO 1600 and clearing the noise with Noise Ninja. I just wish there was a noise reduction program for the Mac.

Sandy, It sure looks good as a jpeg. Have you tried a print to see how it holds up for that?

Never heard of noise ninja but it seems to have performed well here.

Printing is usually not my cup of tea, Jim, but after your question I prepared my MasterEdit file for printing and produced an 11x14 print on matte paper. It looks great - very much like the image you see here.

Sandy, You never let that mind rest or do you ?, Experimentation and that inquisitive mind of yours conjures nightmarish scenarios with your former girlfriends, and you were in medical school then!!! Yikes !!!!
Noise Ninja had gotten rave reviews in the Rob Galbraith web site
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/conten ... -6450-6578 And here is the direct link to Picture Code the makers of Noise Ninjahttp://www.picturecode.com/download.htm
If the image is a the right printer/press resolution and color profiled correctly it should print as good as it looks in the monitor!!!
Wonderful digital manipulation!!! 8)

Great photo of one of my favorite ducks. The square format is perfect here.

Nice shot, Sandy! Geting the neck ring to show clearly is no small feat.

Sandy, I love this image and at ISO 1600 it's amazing. Since many of my shots are flying birds in low light, I'll have to give "noise ninja" a try.

Sandy,

Good closeup. Interesting to hear that software allows a large print at ISO 1600. I see the same thing with Digital GEM when scanning film, though the ISOs are much lower, of course. Software may be the end of noise and grain.

Sandy,

A fine closeup. I use Neat image to good effect even on ISO 200 image with dark BGs or under exposure. I find that higher ISO noise can be cleaned up very well with software. 400 ISO negative film scans look very much improved with the grain reduced/removed. However 10D high ISO images have less detail and look flater. Controlled tests with flash exposures of the same object in large blowups show differences even between ISO 100 and 200. There is no free lunch but the 800 image qualtity is remarkable.
