I just found this shot rather amusing. I wish the BG wasn't as "bleh" and washed out, but the sky's blue still wasn't showing as the sun was still beyond the treeline (AM).

Taken with:

Canon 10D
Canon 100-400mm, @400mm
f7.1, 1/25th
Exp: -1/3, Flash: -1
ISO 200

Thanks for looking :)

Excellent getting him yawning Vadim. Good work with the flash. a little steep, but that's how we see most of them.

Great bird and a nice yawn. Less ambient exposure (say -1) and more flash (say -1/3) would tone down the background and seperate the owl from the tree trunk behind it better.

Great timing Vadim, I can't bellieve I missed it.

From my experience, if you use flash as a main light in this situation, it would leave a strong shadow on the bark of the tree.

I think using flash as main light would work if the owl was against the bright background only (stepping to my left), hence, no shadows would be created. But other than that, I'd tend to agree with Fero that the trunk would probably display some shadow no?

E.J., you have any examples of what your recommending? I'm really curious to know how to solve myself from this situation :?

Thanks!

the yawn is great and I love the owl. :) While I agree with you on the background I still like this quite a bit.

I have just emailed you an example of the kind of exposure EJ is talking about. I am warning you in case you might delete it as spam. I hope it helps.

Thanks AJ!

Now that I look at my photo, I truely wish I had tried with less exposure and more flash. Better luck next time :)

Vadim
