When I'm out photographing insects and I feel something biting, I don't swat first. I look first and if it's good, I photograph it.

A true photographer, photograph first, swat later! :D

A neat shot, great detail in the head and those outer space eyes. I am curious how you took the photo when the deerfly was on one of your hands. Did you photograph with one hand?

Cool to see this on the human skin, too, and now I can see why it hurts when they bite - ouch!

Heather,

Yup, I held the camera with one hand. Lucky for me the fly landed on the top of my left hand and I was able to hold the camera with my right hand. I used my FM2 camera body which is a little lighter than my F5. However, I have done this with my F5 before. I have big hands and usually have no problems with this.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

Now that's literally suffering for your art :D . I think that's a Green Bottle Fly BTW but I could be wrong.

Harvey,

Nope, it's really a deerfly. I allowed it to bite for quite a while as I photographed it at many angles and magnifications. It actually stayed there while I added extension tubes and eventually diopters. All the while, it was sawing into my hand and drinking blood. I had a welt that lasted for about two weeks. I also have shots of Green Bottle Flies that I could post sometime.

Thanks for looking and for commenting.
