Mallard Anas platyrhynchos
Santee Lakes 10-1-05

Spent the day shooting flight shots yesterday and had some wind and lots of good opportunities at the lakes. Have started seeing the first duck migrants showing up at Santee in the last week, Ring-necked Duck (1), Northern Shoveler (4), Blue-winged Teal (6), and a pair of Gadwall. The Mallards have a way to go on their winter plumage but a few are almost there. The Wood Ducks have already molted and are simply gorgeous. Cropped 20%.

I for one want a little more USM on the face and upper breast as I think the near wing was the focal point for the AF. Otherwise a great shot, Mike! I guess the migrant ducks have simply skipped over us up here as we've had a few Ring-necks move in the last couple weeks but thats still it :( Great job!

Nice!
I was there last week. I thought I saw a Blue winged teal but I was not positive with my ID abilities
It's good to see the different ducks coming back.

This is really nice Mike, Mallards are so common and over-looked, but they're a fine looking bird.
