Mountain Quail have eluded me for several years. I have searched in what I thought was the proper location and good habitat many times, without any success. On my recent trip to Northern California I struck paydirt!

I found this bird, along with about a dozen of his mates, in the hills above Carmel Valley, California early one morning. They were along the edge of a gravel road. The birds, contrary to what I had heard and read about them, were very cooperative. I was able to get within shooting range without them running off.

20D with 500 and 1.4X TC, ISO 800, 1/100, f8.

Thanks for looking.

Very beautiful colors and nice detail. Now you have to get him off the road onto a suitable perch. Still good to finally capture him. :)

It's a lovely shot of the Quail with great exposure and depth of field, Bruce.

Bruce,

Very nice shot. Love the pose with the slight head turn. The habitat in the background adds alot to the image.

This is sure a new species for me.....guess when I can't get the quail in my back woods I give up on even knowing the other species. Great shot....and a very colorful bird. Love the look...and step along with the inclusion of habitat. Glad you found this one......sounds like he's rather elusive.

Nice one Bruce--I know some places to find these but unlike yours the one's I've seen are very elusive.
