I'm sad to say that probably 90 percent of the Skimmer chicks at Tiger Tail Beach were swept away by the storm surge caused by Hurricane Dennis. You could see where the water pushed thru the nesting sites from the Gulf of Mexico as it headed for the lagoon. Only the larger chicks survived, except for a few small ones at the northernmost part of the nesting area. 2 Wilson Plovers chicks survived, and there are 2 Least Tern chicks who must have hatched since Dennis passed by.

The little fellow below did not make it.

Nature is nature, sad as it might be.

Hugh

And there is another on the way isn't there? Nice shot even if it doesn't have a happy story.

Hugh--a fitting tribute.

I was afraid that is what would happen when the storm came though....

Nice shot of a sad event, Hugh. I wish the parents were aware of the 10-year hurricane cycle we're in and nest farther inland.

Hugh,

This is an excellent shot. Too bad it goes along with such a sad story.

Nice image. I guess we understandably focus on the effects of hurricanes on humans so thanks for the reminder about how they also effect our feathered friends.
