This shot of lake Michigan was taken just before sunrise in early October. I was standing at the beach just north of Montrose Harbor. I wish the seagulls would have all given a little better pose, but this is the best they offered.

Should I keep the open sky in the frame or crop it out? :?

I can't remember if I used a 2 stop ND for the top portion of the frame, but since the beach is so dark, I doubt it. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I prefer this without the sky. It dilutes the overall impact of that great sky. Nice texture on the shore. Looks like one heckuva morning.

Interesting differences in perspective that people are taking on this one. I prefer a narrow panorama of those wonderful clouds with just a bit of sky and water and nothing else!

Great sky, Clinton! Love the depth and color here.

Wow, those sunrise clouds are incredible! Might consider a crop off the bottom to get rid of the one bird posing as a rock and some off the Left to balance, but then again, I like it as is as well.

I vote for cropping out the colorless part of the sky. I think it makes it an even better image.

I would crop the sky out for sure. It strengthens the overall composition and allows the birds to become more prominent.

Thanks gang for all of the suggestions! In the below, I've cropped out the sky and the bird that looked more like a rock. At the horizon you can see a long fishing pier, and much further in the distance a water pumping station.

This is much more dramatic after the crop. Nicely done.

Very nice!

I was going to agree with the suggestion to crop the sky, but I underestimated the impact! The cropped version is VERY COOL!

The crop makes it just spectacular. Is the horizon slightly lower on the right?
