It's been too long since I've posted any photos here but I'm back in the saddle now.

I had a wet but enjoyable day at the Portland Zoo today. Although I intended to bring along some camera support (a monopod) it ended up not working out so I decided to just shoot portraits with my 300 f4L IS lens. I surprised myself and got some good ones.

These monkeys sure are good at looking back at you when you look at them!

Canon 20D, 300mm f4L IS, ISO 800, f4, 1/40 second handheld. In PSCS, slight crop, NeatImage, curves, USM.

The facial expression is very human. The light shooting out from the back of his head is not.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

Jens - picky, picky  Ok, I've done some PS work to remove the "ray of light". Result is below.

Mike - thanks!

Georgina - I think it's the way that the monkey's facial hair curls down around its mouth that gives it the sad look. It makes the mouth sort of look downturned.

Hi Paul and thanks for your comment!

I knew I should have kept a record of the names of the animals I was taking pictures of but, of course, I didn't. Fortunately, the Portland Oregon Zoo keeps an online set of identification pages for the animals in its care (Oregon Zoo Animal List). Looking it up there, I see that this was one of the Pale Faced Saki Monkeys - I believe a female. I have a portrait of the male which I'll post tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks, Robert. It hadn't even occurred to me that I could post this in the Wildlife forum. I'll let one of the moderators give me their judgement on that.

Also, thanks for the welcome back. Sometimes life just gets too darned busy! :(

Very nice portrait Geoff. This one would certainly have a place in the Wildlife Forum (I think you got your shots placed the wrong way round!)

The expression you captured here and the wonderful eye detail really make this image stand out! 8) 8) 8) 8) :)

Got you taken care of Geoff. No more monkeying around today, OK! Unless, of course, the monkeying around means posting more monkey pictures. That'd be OK!

Very nice close up of a very interesting subject. I like how you included the shoulder and part of the arm of the frame edge. Background is excellent and well managed (zoo)..I'd probably take a little off of the top unless you are saving that for text. Love the detail, dof is solid, sharp throughout. Thanks for posting..

Dennis, I should have done the top crop on the repost. You'll notice the original posted image had more off of the top and I forgot to do that on the reedit. One of these days I'll get it completely correct...
