This hawk taught me a good lesson that day. It was one of those days where I had been driving around and walking and not really finding anything to photograph. I saw a Red-tailed hawk on a fence post as I was heading home and I thought I would give it a try. Of course a soon as it realized I was slowing down it took off(which is standard for southern ontario). I was going to break my gear down when I saw another red-tail further up the road. I drove slowly past it and it didn't fly, so I turned around and tried the beanbag with the 2x on, and it still didn't fly! Unfortunately I was backlit at this time so I switched to the 1.4x and literally drove right by until I had the light right to catch the setting sun on him. I spent about 20 minutes with this hawk as he hunted the grasses along the road edge(he was successful , judging by the blood on the feet and bill, but I missed that action  )
The lesson I learned was to keep trying!

10D, 600IS, 1/640 , f8, ISO 200, 1.4x, some PS levels, curves, etc. cropped a small amount off the top for posting here(still hoping for that cover shot! )

Scott, beautiful image! Beautiful light and background... I like the fence strand at the bottom... gives perspective.

Even though you think that you missed the action...this is one superb shot! I love how the hawk is gripping it's talons to the post! I also like the barbed wire, it makes this bird of prey even tougher...now, if the hawk could just be perched on a Harley! :D

Very nicely done. I like the inclusion of the barb-wire in this shot.

Excellent shot, Scott. I love to see eye, beak, and talons clearly. Different strokes for different folks -- I'd prefer a crop above the wire.

Beautiful light and background. Looks like a bit of blood on the bill as well as the talons. I like the barbed wire, it adds an extra "weight" to the bottom.

Scott Excellent shot. My preference is without the fence.
Good Shooting.

Sounds like the hawk I chase around. This is excellent and the blood on the talons really adds to the shot. Worth the chase I would say

Beautiful Hawk image. One to be proud of. I would crop it above the wire if it were mine.

Great encouragement Scott. I too get impatient with the Red-tails.

Lovely shot, head turn and fabulous BG. I'm OK with or without the wire.

Great light, pose, blood... my vote is for nixing the wire. Sweet shot!

near perfection for me would be cropping above the wire. A personal thing.
