For those who are tired of owl shots, you may continue on now  Thought I would throw in one from the -40 weekend in Duluth. This was taken at Sax-Zim. The color is the setting sun shining on some vegetation behind the bird. The sun was actually to my left. 4 minutes before that the background was all gray.

Cloned out a branch in the upper left corner.

20D 500mm IS at 1/60 f:5 and fill flash on gitzo 1325 and wimberly head

REPOST COMMENTS:Thanks for all of the comments. It did look like I forgot to sharpen this one. I added just a little contrast. The "cutout" look is natural, I did nothing to the picture to create that affect. It is full frame width with a little off the top and bottom so it would not look so long. Maybe I should have left it full frame.

Nice one Jeff. I am not sure about the white bottom but I like the red glow in the background. Minus 40 - that is downright nasty. Where is Roanoke by the way?

Absolutely beautiful bird and the background is very sweet. It seems a tad soft to me. Maybe one round of USM at 100 .2 and 0 ? Good job here

A terrific shot indeed, Jeff!
Would want a bit more sharpening and contrast though ...

This has a great posterlike quality to it.

But there is an odd "cutout" look around the bird and branch. I can see a narrow border of noise around the subject so it looks like the background was selected and then blurred, or possibly one of those special edge sharpening actions was used.

Very lovely. That BG is killer. If the image is cropped, one might consider putting back a little more room in the frame to capitalize on the BG which contributes strongly to the soft tone or mood of the image. I'd like to see more of the wash on the bottom and left.

Lovely shot, Jeff. Add a little more USM and you have a winner.
