Yep, another boring song sparrow... I was experimenting with getting in close and succeeded with this little guy. I got to within 5 or 6 feet and he cooperated on his perch. The result was this closeup.

20D, 300mm + 1.4x, 1/800 @ f/7.1, ISO 400, -1/3 EC, cropped, neatimage, usm.

Cool closeup! The detail in the feathers, eyering, and beak are great!

Very nice detail. I wish for more DOF to get the shoulder in focus or a crop to just include the head.

Really? PF? Boy, for the price of that L lens, I hope not! Seriously, Vito, I don't see any. Does anyone else?

lol, it's where the bright reflection of the sky or flash is meeting the deep dark black eye...
it's not a big deal lol,
like, 5 seconds in PS...

if you zoom really close into the eye, you should see the purple...
if not...the colorvision spyder didn't do anything :P ;)

Vito - you are fantastic! ...and have the eyes of an eagle!!! Sure enough, I brought this up in PSCS and zoomed into just the eye and there definitely is PF just at that reflection of the sun in the eye. Hmm, well I guess L lenses can't do everything...

lol, i'm glad to hear it's not my monitor...or my eyes ( )
i bet that is the sun...and not just the sky (my first theory)

Cool shot Geoff. I wish you had stopped down to f8 for this one thoug. There seems to be less clarity on the nearer parts of the bird.

The softness at lower left is due to 2 reasons:

1. DOF - yes, I probably needed to step down a tad more. I had enough light to be able to do it or could have gone up in ISO. I didn't think fast enough on my feet.

2. It was very windy. Some of the blur is motion blur as the feathers were getting blown around.

Nice closeup, Geoff!
Could do with less body and trade for a bit more room in front of beak ...

I'm impressed with how close you got! It's sharp in the most important places. More room in front is my wish.

Great closeup, more DOF would make it better.
