Brown Pelican drying off in flight

1D Mk II, 500mm F4, shoulder stock, flash

This brown pelican was flying in formation into the late afternoon sun at
La Jolla when it popped into a stall as if to land in mid-air, then
immediately resumed level flight. A 100% view of the image shows water
droplets falling from the pelican - this must be a drying maneuver. I saw
about five or six birds out of maybe a hundred doing this and was lucky to
catch one at it.

I can just about see those tinny water droplets ...

Nice light on the underside and the water adds a little something extra. They usually come in to the cliffs dripping wet and water drops coming off the wings and feet if they have been out feeding.
