American Kestral - Bosque

I was trying to work the kestrals a lot while Brett B and I were there last week.... but I didn't feel very successful at it. A lot of backlit images, or the face turned away from the light... or too far away. But, what's life without a challenge....

I was trying to decide if the myriad of branches in this image were too distracting, or showed environment. Perhaps those on the left could go away?

Looking forward to your impressions and comments!

Image is cropped from top and bottom approx 30%

D2H, 200-400 VR +1.7 TC, ISO 400, 1/1250 sec, f8, -.3 EV, handheld from car window... Shadow/highlight tool used to decrease shadows on the face...

Like the pose and perch, Bob!
Fill-in flash might have helped to bring out the face details ...

Bob, I like the comp and perch. You might consider cloning out the little twigs in the LL. I think you have pushed the shadow recovery as far as you can go. A stronger catchlight will help the face pop more.

Nice shot of a bird I have never been that close to! I agree about the shadow recovery getting pushed maybe too far; difficult light to work with and you did well with what you had!
4 down, 2 to go.

They usually look left and right. Too bad you couldn't get him when he turned his head toward the light.
