This is my super busy season so I haven't been around much but thought I'd slip one in for the motif. Thanks to a good friend up north last winter I got some really nice images of common and hoary redpoll along with a touch of frostbite  (Many degrees below 0F!) That little spot on my big toe was worth it to me as these common redpoo are really not that common if you don't live pretty far to the north! Thanks for looking.

Jim:

this is certainly excellent. This is a light one . . .not a hoary? Glad you saw the hoary redpoll as well. I only got feeder shots of the hoary. Thus far, the only winter finch in the Adirondacks in sizable numbers is the Pine Siskin. Although last week, pine grosbeaks were seen near Lake Placid. I am headed up there this weekend.

Hey Jeff, Yeah, they are pretty variable but I'm pretty confident that this is a common. Here is a page on my site with some comparison images of the two.

The hoary's seem to have a pug face that has a different look to it. Hope it helps. Good luck up north with the winter finches.... I've heard reports of Bohem's coming down too :D :D

Just checked the link to your redpoll page; some pretty beautiful stuff ! Worth a nip of frostbite I guess !

Terrific shot, he looks so elegant! Checked out the RP page... great stuff... some of those perches are unbelievable. Toes... bah! That's why we're born with ten.
