Rob Servranckx, good friend, digital mentor, and fellow contributor to Naturescapes, recently gave me a wide-eyed look when I sheepishly admitted that I do not have an image of a blue jay in my stock files. I explained that it's extremely difficult to photograph a common subject in a compelling way, especially to attract the attention of editors. I am familiar with some of the incredible blue jay images out there (and recently on this site) so I am going to wait until I have an equally incredible situation to photograph my blue jay. Ditto with chickadees, that is, until I was able to match the bird to just the right perch.

Now, what goes well with blue jay?

Lovely shot, Gustav. I like the BG, and the head is separated quite well from it. As to the pussywillow on the right, I am undecided whether I like it there or cropped out. I also might remove the catchlight on the right. Very well done.

Nice capture, like the head turn. I'm with Sandy.... not sure if I like the OOF willows there. Maybe just eliminate the one on the right an tighten the crop just a hair to take out some of the negative space.

I like the lookback pose. The Bg is a tad busy. I agree with the right willow not adding much to the image. Not an easy bird as you say. You did well.

Nice Gustav. I would like to see the right hand willow ropped off. There also appears to be a bit of a magenta cast.

The look back is priceless ..
A bit more room at bottom for me would have been perfect.
Very well done otherwise, Gustav!

Gustav,

I like the perch but also feel you need more space on the bottom. Great pose.
