Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Birds Gallery, week ending 3rd August, 2012!Can't wait for the drought and heat to end so I have been working on some colder clime images--
Image

Canon Mark IV, 600/4, f/5.6@1/1250, ISO 1000

This is a partial crop of a 12 or so shot stitched panoramic and is but one of many crop renditions I'm playing with. This one winds up to be just about what the full frame off the Mark IV was after the crop from the pano. I wanted to portray an environmental scene more than anything.

Curious to hear what you folks think of the crop and comp*

Love everything about it.....the diagonals, eye contact over the shoulder....and definitely the snow. Bring it on!

Very nice, Paul! I'm looking forward to colder temps too. I'm not usually a fan of square crops but I think this works and I like how the white of the snow could just run into the white paper on a print with a broad border.

Please post the panoramic. I'd love to see it!

I'm lovin' it, Paul. Wish I was closer to see a huge print of this one, as I'm sure it would be super impressive.

Thank Chris and Dave!

I'll post a full pano version a little later--maybe one of the ones where the snow got so thick it looked like one could cut it with a knife! Kind of hard to see the detail though at 800pix, but I know folks here have good imaginations and can get around that!..

I always struggle with these winter shots Jim and to just how much contrast I should add --and still not loose that winter look. I did add some, but was not sure about adding more. Good point--maybe I should go a little more..

Love the way the sticks diagonal through this shot. I agree on a touch more contrast.

Repost with a tad more contrast only on the hawk. Curious if it still looks like winter light on the hawk still to everyone.

Thanx

Composition looks good to me and I like the Red-tail in the snowfall. Yes, it cools me down too.

I prefer the repost. Great image! The setting is just fantastic. I'm not a fan of squarish crops and would prefer something more conventional like 3:2.

Great winter scene Paul, I don't get to see this living in SOCAL. Very nice composition.
