Weighing up the threat

EOS10D, Sigma 100-300 F4 + 1.4TC, ISO 200, F8, 1/160.

The Elephant up to now had only seen the Lioness immediately in the path. He pauses as it is now obvious there are more big cats hidden in the surrounding grass and undergrowth. He sizes up the opposition....

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

This is working up to be a great series Carol. I like how you can see the elephant looking at the second lion in this one.

I didn't even see the second lion until Cheryl pointed it out.

The two images are so subtley different--the angle of view of the elephant being the important difference.

When I view the two images side by side, there's something strange in the first one: Where the second lion should be, there is just a bit of a blur, and it doesn't look natural. Did you use a blur tool or something on that spot of the previous image?

I was just noticing that..
Now that I look at the previous image more carefully.. the blur looks kind of 'funny'.
I like the colors on #1 better (I think it is a bit more contrasty).
The 'camouflage' of the 2nd lioness is really good...
This is a great seeries... keep them coming :)

Thanks Paul, originally the pride were sleeping, sprawled out on the ground and actually what you see in the first image is the blur created by two Lionesses making a hasty move and taking up position to back up the crouching youngster. In my second shot one is visible, though well camouflaged, and the other has taken up position just out of shot. There are two more out of shot on the right of the image. 8)

Ah, that explains it. I thought the blur looked funny because it was both in front and behind one of the shrubs. A single moving animal couldn't have caused that. Two moving lionesses would!

I can't wait to see the rest of the series.

Love it! Can't wait to see the next shot. My bet's on the elephant and the lions moving. (4 lions vs. 1 elephant isn't much of a match!) Also, I'm reading the lion in the middle as not in an attack position but in a "I really don't want to move but can do that in a real hurry if I need to" position. I think lions have a real aversion to moving except in their own time and their own pace and the lions are just being stubborn. Just my 2 cents.

Also, hate to point out a nit but it might be just a bit tilted left, but that can be readily corrected.

I love a good suspense story and this one is turning out to be a thriller! I'd like to see an essay but dragging the story out adds to the suspense!

Thanks for your comments Rich, always appreciated. :) The ground where the Ele is standing is flat, but the foreground is the start of a rise - this, coupled with the angle of the shade on the ground gives the illusion of the shot being slightly tilted. :?

Carol,
I really like how these two shots work together. Vertical on #1 where the elephant is watching the lion on the path, then horizontal on #2 when the elephant turns to look at the hidden lion on the left. Excellent job. I'm sure I wouldn't have thought to do that at the time. I'm really looking forward to the remainder of the series.
