Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Birds Gallery, week ending 15th June, 2012!
Image
Common Loon, BC Interior, Canada
5D2 | 16mm | 1.6 sec | F22 | ISO 100 | Flash with diffuser in hand | Wireless remote

For this image I was sitting in the water to the left of the frame. I held my flash in hand with a diffuser and fired the flash at the end of my exposure.

Connor, one of the best bird images I have seen in a while. What an inspiration. Great technique and the result is just amazing.

Stunning photo Conner ! The majority of Australian waterfowl would never sit this tight when approached, well done !

Really lovely - almost looks like moonlight.
What was the flash setting? Did you just pop it manually at the end of the exposure or was it wirelessly fired by the camera at rear synch?

thanks Roberta! I just fired it manually with the Pilot button when i thought the end of the exposure was near. it wasn't attached by any cables or pocket wizard type things.

Fantastic image! How many trial-by-error shots were made before getting this beauty?

Connor, I especially appreciate the subtle flash work and of its balance with the miniscule light left in the sky - very well executed.

Congrats Connor! Another beautiful wide angle loon shot. Way to make the most of the evening. Most people would have packed it up and gone home an hour before. You stuck around and and made an amazing image!

Thanks Dan! I took ten shots, and I think i have two that work. I left after this because i didn't want to flash the loon too much and didn't feel it would be safe to boat back in the dark.
