Woodchuck, close and curious

While attending the STL Black Bear Workshop with Charles in August we did encounter other animals including a family of woodchucks who were most tolerant of our presence permitting a prone photographer to snap off shots from a distance of four or five feet or less. To prove that fact I submit this image.
Canon Eos 10D, Canon 70-20/2.8 (non IS) at 200. ISO 400, 1/80 at f5.6. No flash, handheld, full frame. Any comments and revisions most welcome.

Now you were pretty close to get that with a 70-200 lens. Love the background and the detail in the right front foot is incredible.

Cute shot. Only wish the leaves weren't in the foreground and the left foot wasn't clipped but still a sweet shot.

Very nice portrait of an extremely cooperative subject.. He has a wary look on his face like he is not sure about you. It looks a little soft around the face, compared to the right foot. You might try a little more selective USM there to see if that helps.

Cool shot of a subject we don't see very often! I like the pose here, and the OOF grass doesn't bother me much. The face does look soft, which seems weird as it appears to be in the same plane as the very sharp RF foot -- my guess is he did one of the face-twitch move about the time the shutter went off? At any rate some selective sharpening might help, if you want to try it.

Good shot, and I like the expression on his face. Good exposure too.

Nice and sharp Joe. Good whiskers. What does a woodchuck do, really?

Nice one Joseph. Like the pose and the intimacy from being so close. Well done

Very nice image and very detailed. Most shots of these are from a distance or the running away shot. Super.

Concur with Cheryl on great detail in the hand but maybe a bit more USM through the face. What a look! (Cracks me up because that look is an absolute ringer for my grandmother!)

Very nice portrait. Isn't it great when your subject is so cooperative?
