When I try to load a black & white jpeg into the forums it comes out with a little blue window with a question mark in the middle. I tried loading a color version and it works fine.

That -- the blue question mark icon -- is usually an indication that the image can't be found (after uploading). Do you have a space or other non-alpha-numerical character in the file name?

Yes, special characters can break the image upload function. For example, if your color image is named "ImageInColor.jpg", it will upload fine. But if the black & white version of the image is named "ImageInB&W.jpg", the "&" character will cause problems. Naming the file "ImageInBW.jpg" would work...
