White Ibis (Eudocimus albus)
Estero Lagoon, Ft. Myers Beach, FL, on 29 Jan 2004

At sunrise, light can range from yellow to rose red. At Estero Lagoon, rosy light predominates and for me is more beautiful than its yellow counterpart. I was sitting on dry mud near the south end of the lagoon surrounded by about 100 birds of all varieties. For two hours they put on a show for me. I consider it one of my most productive and enjoyable sessions.

A few minutes after the sun came between the tall apartment buildings behind me, the most striking bird was this ibis bathed in a rosy glow. It’s a simple shot of a common bird, but the quality of light makes it for me.

BTW the partial metering was a mistake. I thought I had set evaluative. It seemed to make no difference.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Beautiful shot with impeccable detail, composition and colours. What perfect exposure and that rosy glow is indeed, superb. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :)

A very common bird in South Florida, but an uncommonly good shot. :D

:D :D Lovely light, the whites are terrific and the eye is fantastic. The feathers look marvelous, quite fluffy and soft.

Nothing more fun than sitting in the mud taking pix of birds. The whites are perfect exposure and I love the dipped beak in the water. These birds are so difficult to photograph in an interesting fashion, but you pulled it off Sandy.

Simply beautiful, Sandy. I might also like a touch more space on the bottom for the virtual legs but I love this as is. The rosy glow adds a wonderful serene feel to this image.

Sweet stuff Sandy. The color does steal the show in this one, I also like the blueish eye. A bit more room at the bottom for the virtual bill too. Lovely exposure in those creamy whites. 8)

Sitting in "dry" mud in the rosy glow of the rising sun, surrounded by hundred of birds of different varieties sounds pretty idyllic to me. How could you not get images like this  :) A very fine image, Sandy.

Sandy this is gorgeous. An interesting bird in prime breeding condition shown probing for food in wonderful still steely blue water, photographed at a low angle in perfect light, with the exposure nailed... Doesnt get any better for me than this..

Nice place to sit. When I saw you took it at sunrise I thought you were out at 4:30 or 5:00 to get it. Then I saw the date and I see you took it at a much more reasonable hour.

Wonderful image.

Hi, Sandy,

this is beautiful light colro and sharpness. My usual gripe: I want it a hair smaller in the frame, but again, that's just meeee!
