Folks,

Recently I purchased a Lowepro Nature Trekker AW backpack for all my photo equipment, primarily for one trip. I like the capacity of the Photo Trekker but frankly I find it quite clumsy to use for my regular shooting with the backpack straps and all getting in the way, etc. So I'd like some advice as to what to purchase in it's place.

The vast majority of my shooting is done out of the back of my car, even when we travel. I rarely need to carry all my equipment very far from the car. For those occasional times I have a LowePro Mini Trekker which I can use to carry a subset of the equipment. I’d like something makes it easy to access all my equipment while the bag is in the trunk, the backseat or the back of my van. I would like it to be easy to take back and forth into the house or hotel when we travel. A wheeled case sounds nice but is not absolutely necessary. Weight, while not critical at this point, will become more of an issue as time marches on.

When we fly I have a Pelican 1510 hard sided case which fits just about everything, but I need to break things down to fit in there.

Thanks
Ken

Here is my Equipment list:
Canon EOS 40D
Canon Battery Grip
Canon 10D (backup)
Canon 100-400 f4-5.6 IS
Canon 100mm f2.8 EX Macro
Canon 12 mm Extension tube
Tokina 28-70 f2.8 AT-X
Tokina 12-24 f4 AT-X
Canon 550EX Speedlite
Canon ST-E2 Transmitter
Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord No.2
"Better Beamer" Flash Extender
Wimberley Macro Flash Bracket Combo
Various Filters and Polarizers
Batteries and charger
Cords, etc.
Plus other miscellaneous things.

Personally I would consider one of the Think Tank rollers, such as the Airport Security. I don't think I will ever buy another bag again, as I absolutely love my Think Tank Airport International. I would gather the International would fit all of what you mention above, as none of the lenses are very big, etc. As with any purchase like this, if possible i'd check one out at a local camera store. I was able to do that with my Think Tank AI and immediately decided to buy it on the spot after inspecting it and seeing how well it was constructed, etc. I'm currently planning on replacing my laptop bag with an Urban Disguise 60 which will help me bring more gear along and organize things even better while carrying my laptop as well.

Just as an example of what fits in the AI that I mentioned above, I have the following in mine:

Nikon D700 + grip,
Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR
Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 HSM
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR
Sigma 100-300mm f/4 HSM
Nikon 1.7x TC
Nikon SB-900 Flash
Nikon D700 + SB-900 Manuals
Sekonic L-358 Light Meter
Kirk Photo Flash Bracket + Flash Bracket Extender module.
Various accessories like batteries, circular polarizer filter, flash cards, etc etc etc

The best all around bag to work out of, carry in the field etc. that is the most practical is the Kiboko bag.

If you want a roller bag and one that is more convenient to work out of the car with then I agree the Think Tank rollers are great as well. I would take a look at the international as Chris eluded to.

Ken,

I'd think your current equipment would fit nicely in the small Think Tank backpacks. There would be a lot of room to spare in the larger bags.
