This small drab sparrow moved into position while I was trying to photograph a blue grossbeak at Bombay Hook NWR. I always have a hard time ID'ing the drab common species.

Dan, looks like a Swamp to me. Nice shot too. He's just a tad tight in the corner for me and I wish he turned his head just a bit this way.

Very nice image Dan. I was wondering how do you get this type of drop shadow frame around your images? Can I do this with PS Elements II and if so how?

Nice one Dan. This comp works for me. Even though it is placed in the far right of the frame, the even toned open space it's looking into feels right. The dark bird really pops out. Nice. The heavy bill and dark extended eye stripe says Song Sparrow to me. It lacks the heavier breast streaks of most Song Sparrows though and there is no bright rufous wing colors that a Swamp has. A tough ID, I would say Song Sparrow.

This is a swamp sparrow for sure, and a fine one too. The color and pattern are wrong for a song sparrow. Good shot!

Dan,

Since the votes so far are split on the ID, I'll add one more "definite Swamp".

An "out of the box" composition that works.
