Common loon / overcast day

I usually enjoy very early mornings with sun to take loon photos. Cloudy days create a moody image but with limited color as this shot. In this case, I selectively increased the saturation about 20% for the eye.

Canon 10D, Canon 500mm F4 IS, Canon 1.4TC
Canon 550EX on Wimberley bracket
F8, flash comp -1, ambient EC of -1/3

Jeff,

I really like the pose, with the underwing visible and wing spread. I see what you mean about the light, but at least you got it sharp. There seems to be a bit of a halo.. esp around and under the head. Pretty good depth of field @ f8. The eye might be a bit overdone for me.. with the subdued light it looks a little scary, but it might just be on my monitor. A nice loon shot!

Outstanding, dynamic, well composed, got the decisive moment, wing form outstanding, feathering detail wonderful, bird markings pattern over the top...I am ranting here aren't I? :roll: :lol:

Nice, Jeff, love the pose, and the exposure is perfect. The water looks cold - hope you kept your canoe upright the whole time!
