Hi all,

Another closeup from this past weekend at Richardson Nature Center. I got an opportunity to spend quite a while with this Red-tailed Hawk. He was rather demonstrative and kept calling, however always with his head at the wrong angle, or in bad light. I do have a few of him in mid-call, and i'll post one soon, but I particularily like how this shot turned out. By some miracle or accident, I exposed with the flash in such a way that kept the entire background basically black, which is what I wanted. The result was this shot.

Canon Eos10D + 400mm f/5.6 + 25mm Extension tube. 1/160th sec, f/14, ISO200, Flash was set to full light, and I underexposed by at least a stop or two.

edit: Added the "at Richardson Nature Center" so you didn't have to remember where I was last weekend :) Thanx Dennis for the reminder.

No miracle, Chris. You simulated flash as main light. A dark BG often results from this maneuver. The last sentence in the above quote explains how you accomplished it.

BTW, a fine, detailed image.

Stunning details. Well done. I really like this. Gives the red-tail and very dignified look.

Another excellent headshot Chris! They will never match the Kestrel for sheer beauty (IMHO) but a beauty nonetheless. 8) :)
