After the EF400mm f/2.8 L USM comes and go, I find these two used lenses, and I won't disclose the location this time! :wink:

EF300mm f/2.8 L USM or;
EF500mm f/4.5 L USM

Which is a better choice for birding?

Without consider the price problem, fttb. (Acutally, it is important to a poor guy like me) I know both mount well on my Acratech + Sidekick configuration. 500mm would cause me to lose AF on my 10D with TC attached, but it has better reach. Otoh, the 300mm is very sharp, so is AF, can use TC, and of course the cost is lower too. Choices, choices, choices. :)

TIA.

If I were you, I would pick the 300/2.8L as my first super telephoto whether it's for birds or other wildlife applications. Also get yourself both the 1.4x and 2x adapters and you will have all the the flexibility of a very fine 420/4 and a 600/5.6 to go with it all! Your 10D will AF with all three!

My assumption to the above choice is that eventually you will acquire either a 600/4 or 500/4 mainly for birds ...

Don't know if it will make your choices any easier or add to the muddle.
I was in the same boat as you recently wanting more reach and didn't have a pile of cash (try building your own home if you want to see a cash drain) :lol: :lol:
I opted for the 300 2.8 with both TC's shooting with a D-100. This is a great combo for most uses. The 300/2.8 is a fantastic piece of glass and can be hand held, not for long but it can be done.
My next purchase will be the 600MM but that will have to wait a while. I understand your pain but have fun with the shopping.

Thanks everyone for kind advices. That EF300mm f/2.8 L USM (condition 8+) was from B&H and now it is gone... 8) And yes, the ultimate would be a 600mm with a whole new set of equipment.

Definitely check out KEH. I just bought a used 28-135mmIS lens from them. It was listed as E-, but when it arrived, I couldn't find a scratch on it - just like new, but $50. cheaper.

Hello,

The EF500mm f/4.5 L USM is from KEH, I am not sure if it is still there. But EF600mm f/4 L USM shows up at B&H from t2t.

It's ashamed you're not using a Nikon mount, KEH has a half dozen 500mm F4.0 available and have of those are AF-S.

Tony, no shame. :D I have a friend, who is a newbie birder like me, who shoots D1H. Sure, I will let him know about this!
