It's not unusual for me to put a leftover chicken carcass in my backyard for the redshoulders. I was in New Mexico for a week and when I returned I put one out. For 2 days nothing found it. Then I looked out early the other morning and saw one had found it. Something didn't look right and when I looked closer I couldn't believe that there wasn't a redshoulder but a harrier . In my 22 years there I had only seen harriers flying high overhead durning the fall migration. The meadow is small and I had never had one.
I grabbed my camera and 400 5.6 and ran out to the barn bearfoot.... 4 degrees and fired off a half dozen shots before he left. He did return and spend an hour and a half on the carcass on the ground 10 minutes later. You just never know what will show up! 10D, 400 5.6, ISO 200 from barn window sill. Jim Zipp
