This post will reveal how little I travel via airline for photography, so thanks for accepting an infrequent flyer question. I'll be either carrying my Lowe Pro Minitrekker as the one allowed domestic carryon or will use a zoom telephoto case with 100-400 mounted lens as a personal item. I plan on placing my collapsed Bogen 3221 in a carry-on sized luggage. But I'm not sure if this will be checked in or carried on, depending on the previous decision. Is a tripod allowable inside luggage as a carry-on? It would seem to be more threatening than say a nail file! Will it be required as checked-in?

Jeff:

I saw someone get away with carrying one on in Alaska last June, but I would not count on it. I have never even tried as I have enough stuff to carry along w/ my 600. I don't think it is a good plan to try and carry it on--It just looks like something that could be used as a club..

Certainly BA will not allow a tripod/monopod in the cabin under any circumstances. I should imagine other airlines are similar. Pack it in a suitcase just to be safe.

I would HIGHLY recommend not taking your tripod in carry-on luggage. I would put it in checked luggage, well padded of course.

I have seen TSA agents confiscate things at the security checkpoints that would pale in comparison to a tripod as a weapon.

Greg, Brian and I witnessed someone board our same flight to ABQ (to get to Bosque) who had a Lowepro backpack at the gate and was also carrying a tripod - not in a bag or anything. As far as I know they let him board with it.

I pack my tripod in with checked baggage, and so far have arrived twice at destinations without my checked bag (incl. tripod) arriving with me. Both times the airline got the tripod to me within 24 hours of my arrival - still an inconvenience, though.

I don't think a Bogen 3021 or 3221 can be collapsed to a small enough size to fit into a carry-on bag which meets the size template restrictions. If you tried to fit it in the bag at an angle from corner to corner it would still be an extremely tight fit if not impossible fit. Do yourself a favor and stow it in your larger checked baggage. :D

The TSA generally allows tripods to pass but generall not monopods.
