This is the same bird in post #2 that we came across in the morning while it was sunning itself. I decided to put the 2x on the 500 and go for some headshots. Sitting on the road with the tripod almost as low as it would go, I started to inch my way closer not knowing whether or not this bird would let me get closer. Remarkably, I was able to get to minimum focus distance, about 17 ft., and shoot headshots for 5 minutes or so before it headed back into the brush away from the road. Truly an exciting experience for me and I'm sure this bird was just as curious as to what we were all doing. I had to choose my aperture carefully to try and get enough DOF for the head and bill without making the bg too sharp and be even more distracting. I could have used just a bit more as its bill tip is slightly soft on the slide. Full frame.

Now that's a head shot.....and I agree with Larsen....it's the best that I've ever seen. Great choice with aperture....it would have been a tough call for me.

Nice headshot! Your tradeoff of DOF vs. BG is probably about right. The bill is pretty sharp but the BG is beginning to intrude.

Mike,

I'd say you chose the perfect aperture for this situation. This is incredible.
