So many people swear by this behemoth lens that I would like to give it a try during my annual trips to the Everglades and Ding Darling.

Obviously I'm not thrilled with the prospect of flying with a boat anchor but would like to try out this lens nonetheless.

Anyone know of any pro rental shops in Miami and Fort Myers?

Thanks.

Dick:

I know of nothing in Fort Myers. The link below is to an old bulletin on Artie's website. There is one shop in Miami listed--Im not sure what sort of big glass they have.

When are you coming?

As I recall, the longest lens for rent in Miami is a 400 f2.8. I had the same idea before I bought my 500, but couldn't find one to rent. Artie does on occasion rent some of his stuff if he's not using it in a seminar. I'd drop him a note. Another idea is I'll join you at ding darling if the timing works and you can try mine. Drop me a note.

You forgot the "boat anchor" part!

Seriously, I have long entertained the idea of the 400 f/4 DO but the mixed reviews and the fact that it's the first DO lens and obviously has bugs keeps me from moving forward. My gut tells me that eventually there will be smaller, lighter 500's and 600's.

The limitation I have is that my travel situation simply can't accomodate a larger tripod or ballhead--so Wimberly class stuff is out.

Theoretically my tripod and ballhead will support the 500 but I'd like to play with it for grins.

The 300 f/2.8 with a 1.4x blows away the 400DO and is about the same size and a little heavier. I'd recommend that over the 400DO.

I have the 300 and the 1.4x and 2x. Works great with 1.4x; often soft at 2x. Grrrr.

i completely agree. I had the 400mm DO, and my 300mm f/2.8 IS + 1.4x is a much better solution, not to mention it is more versatile. IMHO, this is an essential lens for any outdoor photographer. Now with the 2xII on the 300mm f/2.8 IS, the results aren't *that* bad. I mean, you can get some publishable images with that combo. Not optimum, but you can still retain auto focusing on all Canon bodies.
