Woodstork grabbing a small Blue Crab. Not a particularly common bird for Ft. De Soto, since they generally prefer fresh water. However, thanks to storm surge from the distant passing of Wilma, a freshwater pond at North Beach was flooded then partially filled with sand, leaving a bunch of fish trapped when the waters receded, and making them easy pickings for the birds for the next few days. Six storks along with a host of others were working this pond, within about two days they had fairly emptied it of prey.

Nice close-up of some interesting action. Great shot!

They aren't exactly the prettiest birds - are they?

No,not exactly :D . They have some beautiful plummage (like here: http://www.jasonhahn.com/gallery/displayimage.php?p=284), but that head sure has a scary "Jurassic Park" look to it. :D

Gosh....a Woodstork at Ft. Desoto. What a great opportunity to get this guy feeding. It's a great closeup....and the detail...especially the wet feathers and water droplets are fantastic.
