(Common Murre) Homer, Alaska
We found this Common Murre floundering in a parking lot early in the morning on the last full day we were to be in Homer. Since it was unable to take off, the crows were starting to harass it and we figured it didn't have much time left. Since we were in a good mood that morning, and since it wasn't Bald Eagles harassing the Murre, we decided to rescue it. Dale took the netting from the back of the van and captured our little friend. After a leisurely stroll down down to the bay, we let it go. I had expect that it would bolt wildly once released. It didn't. It simply swam slowly out into the bay. We watch until we noticed all the Bald Eagles flying over our heads reminding us why we had traveled to Homer in the first place. This image was taken just before we released the Murre. We couldn't resist checking out how soft the feathers are on this bird. Handheld Nikon D100, 300mm F4.0 AFS, ISO 1000, Aperture Priority, 1/160 @ F8. Cropped about 10% from all sides Tony
