A silhouette is a symbolic representation, it is therefore particularly important that the subject be clearly delineated and easily recognizable against the background. Overlapping subjects become nondescript making the image unsuccessful. This image clearly shows both wings and legs, and the characteristic shape of the sandhill crane. A touch of flash added the necessary catch-light to bring it all together.

Chas:

I never seen silouettes with catchlights on the eyes but this looks very artistic an add a lot of power to the image.

I'm not sure about the catchlights - they look a bit out of place on a silhoutte - but the shapes of the cranes are just perfect!

Cool! The catchlights are a nice twist on a familiar image. Love to shoot those crane pools at sunset, so much fun.

Chas,

A pretty amazing Silhouette. I am undecided about those catch lights though. Perhaps it's simply because we're not used to seeing them (perhaps it's just me  ).

EDIT: Just noticed a couple of dust spots ULHC.

Neat image, but I'd take out the "catch lights" - they look like someone went a bit over-board w/PS.

Chas, put me down for another vote against the catchlights. I don't think people (non-photographers included) are used to seeing catchlights in silhouettes, and to me it just looks weird! I do like the crane position though.
