Captured this bird as a consolation prize after a disappointing trip this morning.

I recognize the perch ...
A lovely pose captured and very sharp, Angus!
You probably didn't need the fill as the sun was right behind you. Now you have two catchlights.

I know exactly how you feel but don't ever give up. There is always surprises as in this case.

kk, thanks for the encouragement! I found it increasingly frustrating in our local reserve nowadays. It just seems impossible to get within 20 meters of any birds from the hides! :( Not sure what the reasons were... Wanted to give up on the mudflat, but then the ponds are even more hopeless... :?

I was trying to see the effects of fill-flash under various situations. You are right that now it has two catchlights! But I can always use PS to get rid of the smaller one if necessary. :P Although the difference was small in this case under direct sunlight, it still opens up the darker part of the face a bit. I was more troubled by the fact that some details were lost on the shiny bill. :(

Nice picture, it looks like the white breasted is after a real combat, the beak and the tail feathers...

Simple. Clean. I like it. I would loose the second catchlight. I probably wouldn't have used the flash.
