This was 5.10pm (winter) and the sun had just gone down over the horizon. Nicole and I were flying along a dirt road at Werribee Treatment Plant and I suddenly told Nicole to put on the anchors. We stopped just a little bit past this bird and turned the engine off. I shot about 20-30 shots with a variety of lenses (yes I managed to change lenses midshoot). Used my 70-200VR with 1.7x, I think Nicoles Sigma 100-300 with 1.4x, and then at the very end I tried Nicoles 80-400VR. There was a bit of ambient still about, but flash was the main source of light as the sun had gone down behind the bird.

Was going to post another Black Shouldered Kite shot but I think I'll wait a few days seeing as Ofer has just posted his :)

ps. While I don't like this perch we didn't have much choice and so far the only time I've been able to shoot them close up is either on a pole, or on this man made perch that is put into the fields for them.

Beautiful bird in sweet light Darryl! As you say, the perch is far from ideal but the Kestrel is beautiful. 8) 8) 8) :D

you can't help the perch; the Kestrel is difficult to capture under any circumstance.

Yep, this is the first time I've seen him perch :)

Normally he's flying or occasionally perched on some man made item.

A gorgeous bird with nice BG. I like the composition and the perch works in this shot.

To me, the flash makes this shot look very unnatural. It is a good catch but too much flash IMO.

Darryl, I have to agree with Rob. The flash is makeing it a bit flat. Great subject, BG and the perch is fine.

You did well for the conditions. I would crop some of the perch off the bottom and clone out the steel eye.

It has an interesting mood Darryl. I quite like it. The odd one turns up over here occasionally. Never seen one but recently was told about a bird only an hour or so away that fits the description. If the phone rings I'm off

Mike, hehe that ain't steel eye. You should of seen it before I tried to add a catch light in. I put one in the middle and it looked funny. So I tried one slightly off centre, and one longer catch light below it. I guess it does look a bit funny.
