Our first cold front of the season is coming through tonight. This one is being accompanied by severe thunderstorms. I felt really goofy getting this one: standing by the side of the road in the dark, holding an umbrella over my camera, and swatting mosquitos.

EOS 1D with 28-90 at 28mm, f16, bulb.

This is my first attempt at long exposures with digital. The sky in the original image seemed kind of blotchy, so I tried to fix it by blurring it slightly.

Thanks for looking. All comments and suggestions welcome.

Great

Yesterday evening we had a violent thunderstorm also in this side of the pond.

How did you managed to blur the sky without blurring the thunder?

Awesome! The timing and exposure must have been tough, and you did a great job with ti. The loops are great!

The results are awesome and since you didn't get fried it was worth it. I'm not sure I'd be tempted to stand out in a thunderstorm holding a lightning rod (umbrella). Great image though!

This is so COOL!!!!!!! I am so frigging jealous that you guys got the storms and rain that we missed here in Austin!!!!

I love the shot..My single attempt at lightning photography taught me a couple of things: 1) lightning never flashes where your camera is pointed, and 2) the lightning (at least here in Central Texas) is better after the storm passes, not before it...

Congrats!!!!

Awesome shot Bruce. I like the two "electrical elements" in the comp, the lightening and the row of poles... Excellent!

Bruce,

Very cool. Didn't some guy a long time ago stand out in a storm with a kite and a key instead of an umbrella? :D

Wow That is some track of lightning.. Amazing the flow of the bolt(s) how they twist and turn.
This is my first attempt at long exposures with digital
How long did you have the shutter open for before the bolt? The 1D will set at bulb but I have found much more than 30 secs and the banding icreases dramatically.

Umbrella .....not recomended

The lightning looks amazing in this! I also really like how the telephone poles trail off into the horizon, a great example of perspective. This is bascially a simple composition but full of great energy and power!!! Very nice. :)
