A group of these ducks show up every winter at a nearby park in Richardson, Texas (Dallas area), so I took the opportunity to photograph them and practice my long lens technique. The early morning sun and the reflection of the dormant grass made for a good backdrop. When the light strikes them just right, you can see some irridescence in the black head/breast feathers, but I didn't get a good photo to show this. . .better luck next weekend. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Very nice. Sweet water. I'd take some off top for a stronger image.

Sweet !! :D great BG, colors and light. Tighter cropping will definitely improve it.

Still is a very nice shot, Mike!
Would also go for a tighter crop for visual impact ...

As the others have said.....a beautiful duck in nice light......and a little off the top. Nice job getting the exposure right and the sheen on the front.

Beautiful. It pops off the page (er, screen).
Nice job with exposure to get reasonable detail in head and breast while retaining detail in the lighter sections of wing and flank.
I agree that a bit of cropping at the top would be good but I also like the image as it is.

Beautiful shot.
I agree with the cropping sugestion above.
I like how that bright yellow eye stands out so clearly against the darker head.

Very nicely done. The golden color of the water really complements the monochromatic looking Scaup well.

I quite like the colors on the water of this one, Mike. I wish that there were more details in the birds plumage. These can be tough ducks to expose for. Good job.

A little contrasty but a great image nonetheless. I like the tighter crop suggestions.
