Great Blue Herons, Venice Rookery

D70, 600f4, iso 400, 1/640, f7.1, about 25% crop.

These herons are nesting on the north side of the pond, not on the little island. Taken today while out with Jim Urbach during windy, overcast conditions. This image had to be reduced to 50% for web posting - the facial details, eyes and whites are much better on the original. Comments and critiques welcome.

Wow-What a neat shot. wonderful behavior and the essence of what the Venice Rookery is all about. This is on my wish list.
Did much survive the hurricanes, or were these nests rebuilt, or do you know?

Jerry,

Nice image. This pair was certainly the most interactive today. THe rookery has totally survived the hurricanes but only GBH's and a pair of anhingas are nesting now.

Steve, Most nests seemed to be a new, and compared to my neighborhood near Orlando that lost about a quarter of the large trees, the rookery seems to have received minimal hurricane damage.

This is sensational! The symmetry of the herons is great, but throw in the red flowers and it's absolutely fantastic.

 Great capture here Jerry, I like the berrys on the Brazilian-pepper tree. You might take a hair off the top and sides.
