I've taken so many shots of this red crested porchard, he's kind of gotten used to me. This was my closest approach and my best portrait of him thus far...from the south pond...I was on the bank and nearly in the water. I'm no longer afraid of the crocs as Valerie told me they went out to sea again....

Minor cropping on the right only. processed in photoshop cs.

Mike a nice comp and BG. There's still a softness to the image. I would have given up some shutter speed for more DOF, as f4 did not get the neck in focus. The colors are great.

This an awesome portrait.
Softness doesn't bother me at all as the eye is plenty sharp.
It has the studio feel and quality as mentioned before.
Way cool!

Beautiful portrait, but I'm with Alan in wanting more sharpness. Perhaps more USM would help (I understand this varies between LCD and CRT), but I'd agree stopping down from wide-open would be smart. The bigger a bird is in the frame, the more you need to stop down to hold DOF. In this case, being so close with such a smooth background, there's no reason to shoot wide open.

Great portrait PP, great colors and good comp. I woould do selective sharpening of the bill and maybe burn the hot spot after, since sharpening may increase it. Isn't Pancho a ham? :)

This is beautiful. I'm with the others in wanting a little more DOF and/or sharpness. Just remember....the closer you get the more DOF you're going to need. Since you're on a first name basis with this guy (who has never given me the time of day) I'd keep working on him. Great job as is with him!!!
