Well if we've had lots of spotted big cats posted, it's only appropriate to see some of their dedicated enemies. I think it's more of a challenge to get a good hyena shot than a good leopard shot, at least once you've spotted it. A leopard, if it's willing, will look you right in the eye. A hyena is likely to slink away as soon as spotted.
These cubs were in a den in the Ngorongoro Crater in 2001. (Went back in 2002 but no one was there.) Everyone was asleep and had no inclination to get up and play despite our long wait. I should have mentioned that you have two types of hyenas, spotted and striped. The latter are much rarer in Tanzania at least and are solitary hunters usually spotted only at night.
