Hello NatureScapers...

Not too many takers on the motif this week, so I thought I better give it a try. Dappled or uneven light has always been a challenge for me. I've tossed a ton of pictures made in this type of light. But it can work and I've seen other photographers handle it well. For me, it seems to work when the spot lighting hits the subjects eye in a portrait type photograph or emphasizes the action depicted in the photograph.

Fill can be used to decrease the depth of the shadows in the field. Back at home/office post processing of the digital capture (particularly the shadow highlight tool Greg Downing describes in the e-magazine section) can help even out the uneven lighting situation and get the photo under control. Like anywhere else, usually it works best to expose for the brightest area and try to save the shadows with fill and/or post processing. The challenge with this type of light is the extreme dynamic range, particularly when working with slide film.

Hopefully you will find this photo a successful example of uneven light spotlighting the action depicted.

Thanks for looking and for any comments or suggestions..

I think it's wonderful and inspiring. The behavior says it all with universal language. Very well done. 8)

OMG!!! This is like right out of Disney! The way the adult's paw is wrapped gingerly around the cub, the way that cub is stretching into that lick, it's unbelievable. I couldn't have imagined a better angle on the subjects, and your composition and subject size is wonderful. I would never have seen such behavior if not for your photo. Thanks for sharing, Dennis!

A truly inspirational shot Dennis. Timing, comp, and the way you handled the exposure in the tricky lighting is superb. I'm awestruck...congrats.

What more is there to say Dennis! The timing of this shot is superb, as is the content. I remember well as a small child having to stand still while my mother wiped my grubby little face with a damp face cloth after a meal.

The interaction captured here is priceless! The little face gazing upward, the comforting - yet restraining, paw of Mom, and that tongue just wrapped around the contours of the cub's head.

Yes, this image is magical in many ways, and the icing on the cake is your expert handling of the dappled light to produce such an awesome final picture.

Its hats off time to salute this wonderful, inspiring presentation. Congratulations on this Master Class in animal photography!! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Dennis, I am speechless! The cub's face in the upward position alone would have been dynamite, but the mom's paw wrapped around her baby is just unbelievable. It should be on the cover of a magazine!

Amazing, wonderfullyl amazing! Loved the interaction and the tongue and the face turned a bit to the side. Thought it was a bit tight - and then noticed the paw in front gently restraining which really puts this over the top.

This is the best cougar image I have seen. This would be the one instance that not being able to see an eye still works. The paw wrapped around the baby and the full tongue is AWESOME!!! Well Done.

One of your most dynamic images to date. The behaviour captured is awesome and their is a tremendous amount of emotional impact with this one and of course your handling of the uneven light adds even more. Thanks for sharing the image and the instruction.

I love everything about this image. What did you have to give them to get them to pose like this? Very well done.
