Victoria Crowned Pigeon Goura victoria -endemic to New Guinea
SD Zoo- Parker Aviary

Found this spectacular and quite popular bird in the same aviary as the Bowerbird in my last post. This handsome beast was collecting sticks and taking them up to its partner on the nest which has one egg in it. I wish there was a less distracting bg and more DOF to get the head feathers all sharp, I believe I was at f/16. Cropped less than 10%.

Head feathers are spectacular and the twig is a bonus. You've got your own critique.

The expression with the twig kills me. He looks like he's up to something. Cool shot Mike.

Lovely shot, Mike. An amazing looking bird. I have a nice shot of a Common-crowned Pigeon taken at the Wings of Asia aviary at the Miami Metrozoo. The two birds are identical except for the white areas on the crown.

Mike, I think you've maximized the features of this unusual bird, most excellently.

What a bird Mike... very impressive looking!!!

I have shot the one Sandy was mentioning without success. The bg has been killing me!!!

The lighting on the head is great and the bird seems to pop out of the frame. Congratulations !!!!!

Mike,

Excellent portrait. I like how you placed the birds head against the darker portion of the background. Love the red eye.

Cool shot -- DOF looks fine to me and not much you could've done with the BG.

Mike,

Another impressive aviary shot. The intense color, the twig and of course the "do", make this a very different bird image. You've been quite productive at the aviary. Most of my aviary images wind up in the recycle bin :) .

Mike,

A great shot. I will be in Papua New Guinea in July and hope to see this bird in the wild. I would love to get this close.
