American Bison - Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
EOS 1D Mark II, 70-200 @ 70mm, 1/800, f/5.6, ISO 320

I almost got stuck in Yellowstone National Park when a freak summer blizzard that closed all of the park's passes struck yesterday morning. To get home, I first drove 50 miles into the park from West Yellowstone and was then turned around by the road closure (would be nice to have had a sign posted somewhere along the route) forcing me to take an alternate route through Idaho to Jackson for my flight home - total miles 230 instead of 110. Temperature change from take-off to landing - 78 degrees. Here is one of many photos I took in the blizzard. I was actually photographing snow covered pines at the time crouched under a tree for some protection from the elements when this Bison came huffing and puffing through the clearing. He didn't see me at first but then suddenly did and stopped, looked me over a couple of times, snorted and moved on. It was a bit scary at first but all went well. Here is one of the shots I took during the encounter.

Hi E.J.,

I think this had a phenomenal dream like quality about it. I love pine trees covered in snow and this image is made all that much better by the inclusion of the Bison. I love it. :)

Sounds like you had quite an adventure!

EJ,

This looks like a postcard. I'd place this amongst some of the top wildlife scenes i've ever seen posted here. I think its that good a shot. Absolutely beautiful.

Who would've expected snow images this time of year? Really a beautiful shot.

Almost looks like a painting. Like the composition with the snow - as usual!

Guess the new camera isn't so good after all E.J. - awful lot of 'noise' in this image...........

Seriously though, love the shot!! 8)

EJ this is great....the snow storm really makes the image. The composition is perfect. I like how he is small in the lower part of the frame and the small tree next to the subject. Burrrrr!
