I stumbled upon 9 GBHs having dinner in and around the tidal flats near the ferry terminal outside of Juneau last night.

This is one of my favorites:
Image
Taken in difficult lighting that was fading fast. Using my flash/BB/wimberely bracket combo wasn't the answer since it gave the herons a "zombie from hell, silver glowing eyed" look that was not at all attractive  Is it even possible to avoid the reflective eye effect when using a flash/BB on a fairly distant subject since the angle between the flash and lens is so narrow? Hints and tips gratefully accepted!

Specs:
10D + 500 f/4 IS + 1.4 Canon TC MkII taken from my truck, Kenesis bean
bag used for support, ISO400, 1/100, f/6.3, AI servo, partial metering mode, exposure comp +0.3. Processed in Neat image and PS6. Image edges cropped by about 1/3.

Cheers!

Cool pic.. he almost has the shade hunting down.... except he's looking in the wrong direction for fish! He needs some RE's to show him how it's done. Can't help you with the flash specs, I don't own one yet :( . I like the unique pose.

Nice shot. The unusual "checking the deodorant" pose and the reflection really set this one off.

Good work.

A GBH that thinks he's a Reddish! how funny! Well captured, better light would make this sing but I think you did pretty well here.

Love the pose and reflection. Not sure about the split toned water.
