Bitterns are amazing and it was a delight to spend a few hours watching them at BBSP. Previously I had only seen Bitterns in the UK where they tend to be a distant brown blur lost in a reed bed. Anyways, one of the things that astonished me was their pneumatic neck extension - one moment it is almost twice their body length the next it has all but gone.

I like this photo partly for the "short neck variant", partly for the neck/cheek feathers and partly for the green legs - excellent camouflage, your body and neck look like dry reeds and your legs like waterweeds

I'm not sure about the twigs sticking out its derrriere though
