Bitterns are amazing and it was a delight to spend a few hours watching them at BBSP. Previously I had only seen Bitterns in the UK where they tend to be a distant brown blur lost in a reed bed. Anyways, one of the things that astonished me was their pneumatic neck extension - one moment it is almost twice their body length the next it has all but gone.

I like this photo partly for the "short neck variant", partly for the neck/cheek feathers and partly for the green legs - excellent camouflage, your body and neck look like dry reeds and your legs like waterweeds :)

I'm not sure about the twigs sticking out its derrriere though :(

Thanks for viewing, any comments welcome.

Ever so rare to see this bird in the open!!, nice capture I must say, exposure to the edge, nice colors and the head is slightly soft, all easily fixed in PS, Congrats!! 8)

Good catch to get him in the open like this. The neck is almost non-existant here! I agree with your assessment about the sticks and Alex's comment about sharpening. Otherwise really nice.

Cool shot!
The BG is a little busy as already mentioned but not bad. Have you tried darkening it a bit with a layer mask?
